Chapter 15
At first, when Nikolas heard the news about Gia's attack, he panicked. He was unsure about what he should tell David. They were at the precinct visiting Lucky when the news came. Lucky dispatched some uniforms to Wyndermere. Lucky suggested to Nikolas to that they talk in his office, away from the chaos of the squad room and David. David had been fascinated with the precincts computerized command center and database.
David was entranced by it all and Nikolas allowed one of the computer techs to take him to the command center. That was when the news about Gia came.
"Where is Gia?" A distraught Nikolas yelled into his cell phone. He was speaking to one of Wyndermere's security guard.
"What do you mean that she's gone," he bellowed. He slammed the phone shut when he didn't get the answer he wanted.
"They can't find her," he said to Lucky, who was just getting off the line with one of his patrol officer.
"I put a BOLLO, a be on the look out, for her. Nikolas, she'll be okay. From what my guys tells me, it was the intruder who got the bad end of the it," Lucky said. Nikolas knew his brother was trying to calm him down. It did little good.
"She'll go after Helena, you know that," Nikolas said with certainty.
"Considering the last person Helena sent, I'd worry about Helena," Lucky mused. Nikolas didn't find it funny.
"I'm still worried about her," Nikolas confessed.
"Worried about who?" Lucky and Nikolas turned to find David standing in the doorway wearing a Port Charles Police baseball cap. Nikolas stood there for a moment unsure of what to say to his son.
"It's your mother," he began, but he didn't know where to go. How could he tell his son that his mother was attack and now missing?
"It's my mom, isn't it?" David said. Nikolas was quick to read the concern in his son's eyes. Nikolas came to him.
"She's okay. There was an intruder at Wyndermere but your mother is fine," Nikolas placed an arm around the boy. David's anxious look eased.
"In fact, your mom kick the guys…" an almost gleeful Lucky began until he saw the glare in Nikolas' eyes.
"She's fine," Lucky said. Shaking his head at his brother, Nikolas stared down at David who was - smiling?
"David, are you all right?" He knelt down to meet David at eye level. David nodded.
"She kicked his butt," he was grinning now. Nikolas didn't like it.
"David!" Nikolas admonished and shot his brother a nasty look.
"It's not the first time," a defensive David said. Nikolas looked up and stared down at his son confused.
"What do you mean?" Lucky asked. David shrugged his small shoulders.
"I mean the last time, she broke the man's jaw," a calm David said.
"What!" Both Lucky and Nikolas said in unison.
"He was a bad man," an annoyed David said. Nikolas stared at his son and wondered for a brief moment whether he had to worry about the Campbell side of the family.
Nikolas pulled out a chair and asked his son to sit down. Lucky and Nikolas took a seat as David who patiently stared back at them.
"Could you explain, please?" Nikolas asked with all the calm he could muster. As if it was a cue, a grinning David leaned forward in his chair as if telling a story to his friends.
"This is so cool," David beamed. Nikolas rubbed his temple.
"Okay, you know mom's a really good lawyer. I mean the best," David said. Nikolas nodded.
"Well, she helps other people too, not just those rich clients. Mom said you always have to look out for the small guy, it's important. So she does that, she helps out at the women's shelter, for batter women. You know, she raises money, gives free legal advice. She's the best," David was talking faster and faster as if the story couldn't come out quick enough. It took all of Nikolas' effort just to keep.
"She's always doing things for them and a lot of them are her friends. They respect her. So when something bad happens to them, she gets sad and upset and wants to do something." David took a deep breath. So did Lucky and Nikolas.
"When one of her friends' husband showed up at the shelter…." David's eyes turned serious and sad.
"What happened David?" Nikolas asked, but he was sure he already knew the answer.
"Mom was sad for a long time. When she thought I didn't see, she cried. Then she got mad," David said.
"How mad?" a tentative Lucky asked.
"Well, she made sure that man got sent away for a long time when the police arrested. Then she raised enough money to hire a guard that stays at the shelter all the time. But the big thing was, she got people to volunteer their time to teach all her friends to learn how to defend themselves. Mom really got into it. She took the classes along with the women, and she got good," David buoyancy returned.
"How good?" a caution Nikolas asked.
"She teaches classes on Saturday at the Y," David said. Lucky and Nikolas looked at each other.
"Can we get back to the broken jaw," Lucky asked.
"Oh yeah…okay, mom's company gave a BBQ for the shelter. It was cool, rides, clowns…,but I am too old for that you know…"
"David," Nikolas made a rolling movement with his finger.
"Anyway, some jerk comes to the park and starts messing with one of the women. I think it was her boyfriend….I don't remember, it happened so fast. One minute, the guy is choking this lady and the next mom is standing over him. It was so fast and way passed cool. The cops came, there was an ambulance it was the best day," David beamed.
"Gia?' Nikolas said, slightly awed.
"Round house to the head," David pantomimed a snapped to the head. Nikolas groaned.
"Go Gia," Lucky said smiling.
"No one messes with my mom," David said, his tone serious. Nikolas drew in a long deep breath. He made a mental not to piss Gia off, and then he realized it was too late for that. The office door opened and a patrol officer entered the room.
"We got her," the officer said. Nikolas and Lucky bolted up from their seat.
"Got her?" Nikolas asked.
"She wasn't happy about. She had this on her." The officer pulled out a bag that held a small knife.
"Christ," Nikolas rubbed his temple.
"Where is she?" Lucky said.
"Outside, she said she's going to sue us." The officer looked nervous. As Lucky walked passed him he let out a huff.
"Lucky she didn't break your jaw," he said. Nikolas followed. When David got up from his seat, Nikolas commanded him to stay put.
When Nikolas saw Gia sitting beside one of the detective's desk, she was seething. It was a little frightening. The minute she saw him, she stood up.
"She came after me at Wyndermere," Gia growled. Nikolas nodded.
"I know, I'll take care of it," he promised. This seemed to do little for Gia.
"David could have been there," her anger seemed to mount. Nikolas turned to see David through the open door of Lucky's office. His eyes riveted on both him and Gia.
"This is ridiculous!" a familiar voice ranted. Nikolas turned to see Helena entering the precinct in handcuffs. Helena's presence silence Gia as everyone stared at the irate Helena. Lucky stopped the procession of Helena, officers and two men in dark suits.
"What the hell is going on?" a confused Lucky asked. One of the men in the dark suit reached inside his suit pocket and pulled out a badge.
"FBI," the man said.
"You want to tell me what this is about," Lucky asked.
"She's dangerous," Gia yelled as she charged Helena. It took all of Nikolas effort to stop her.
"Let go!" Gia demanded. Nikolas held her tighter.
"Again, what is this about? I don't have an arrest warrant for her…yet," Lucky gave Helena a snide look.
"I told you it's a mistake, take these horrible things off me," Helena commanded, holding out her cuffed hands.
"No mistake sir, we have a standing warrant for Duscha Alexandrova," the man said stiffly.
"What?" Nikolas said, slightly loosening his grip on Gia.
"Nikolas, please tell these fools who I am?" Helena demanded. Nikolas blinked in disbelief.
"Who did you say?" Lucky asked. The FBI agent handed Lucky a paper. Lucky took his time to read it and muffled a laugh, and then it handed it to Nikolas. Nikolas read what looked like a federal arrest warrant for a Duscha Alexandrova. There was a picture of his grandmother attached to it.
"It says…Alexandrova is wanted for questioning for a Home Land Security issue. The FBI wants to question her," Nikolas read. A dumbfounded Gia snatched the paper from him and read it, herself.
"Duscha!" Gia said, making a face.
"Nikolas!" Helena yelled. Nikolas kept his face as still as a stone.
"Lucky, I'm taking my family home," he cut his eyes at Helena, whose desperate eyes pleaded with him.
"I'm sure this will be straightened out in a few days. As long as Ms. Alexandrova cooperative," the FBI said. Helena squirmed.
"I think you should be thorough. The PCPD will give you our full cooperation," a smiling Lucky chimed in.
"Nikolas!" Helena screamed at the officer took her away and down a narrow hallway.
"You want to tell me what that was about?" Nikolas asked his brother. Lucky shrugged.
"Probably some computer glitch. I'm sure it will be straightened out in a few days. But its a few days without Helena," Lucky said smiling.
"I hope they bury her under the jail," Gia cursed and went toward Lucky's officer. Nikolas turned to see David standing in the doorway just inside the door. Gia grabbed David's hand and headed for the front door. Nikolas followed and told his brother he'd talk to him later. This was all too much drama for him, first Gia and now Helena's mistaken identity.
"Hurry dad," David called out to Nikolas. Nikolas caught up to them. Gia was still furious as they headed out of the precinct. When Nikolas looked at David, he was surprisingly calm, too calm. In fact, the kid was smiling.
